Malvasia defines Sitges

The Llopis Legacy, origin of our winery

This Almogáver fought in the city of Monembasia (Greece), in the 14th century under the orders of Roger de Flor against the Ottomans. Wounded in battle, he was healed of his wounds with a wine that was attributed medicinal and healing properties: Malvasia. Since its entry into our country, whether with this mythological halo, or through the trade of the Western Mediterranean led by the Genoese and Venetians, this variety has acclimatized and become a traditional variety, one of the most famous in European courts and banquets, and positioning Sitges on the map of exclusive and emblematic Catalan wines. In any case, we already have documentary evidence that Malvasia was cultivated in Sitges towards the end of the 15th century. In modern times, Malvasia from Sitges was exported throughout Europe and also to overseas colonies, especially to Cuba, thus becoming one of the most emblematic and famous Catalan wines outside our borders. Sitges, therefore, was positioned on the international map for its sweetest liquid heritage.
It is a sum of factors that contribute to the decline of Malvasia in the 19th century and relegate it to a past and romantic scenario: attacks of oidium and phylloxera, the appearance of Catalan champagne – the latest novelty in the exclusivity and luxury of wine -, the proliferation of counterfeits, the low productivity of the vine, and the high production costs. But with the arrival of tourism in Sitges at the beginning of the 20th century it ended up transforming the socioeconomic network linked to the wine world, and the fishing town would become a reference and world tourist destination until today. Aware that Malvasia would eventually disappear completely, shortly before his death, the Sitges diplomat, lawyer and visionary, Manuel Llopis i de Casades (1885-1935) wanted to prevent this by bequeathing to the Hospital de Sant Joan Baptista the rustic estates spread across Aiguadolç and Miralpeix, as well as the Sitges Malvasia business of the Celler Llopis and the last strains of this variety. It is thanks to this legacy that today Sitges, through the Hospital Sant Joan Baptista Foundation, continues to enjoy this product, which is the most genuine that we can offer our visitors. The Celler de l’Hospital, therefore, is the birthplace of all the Malvasias that are spread across the Catalan territory. The opening of the Malvasia Interpretation Center in April 2019, as a wine tourism and experiential space, helps us spread the knowledge and heritage value of the Sitges Malvasia vineyard and wines.

Malvasia de Sitges heals body and soul

The Sitges Hospital was founded in 1324 by the knight of Sitges Bernat de Fonollar. Our entity, therefore, the Sant Joan Baptista Hospital Foundation of Sitges, is one of the oldest active institutions in Catalonia. Initially, this Hospital was focused on the medieval concept of hospitality and shelter for the poor, pilgrims, orphans and the sick; and was located right above the sea rocks of the Puig de Sitges, in the fishing district called the Sant Joan district. But due to advances in medicine, science and technology, that building became outdated. It was then that in 1912 the new building of hygienist architecture, of modernist inspiration, by the architect Josep Font i Gumà, was inaugurated, with an artistic and architectural language with a high catalogued heritage value. It is one of the best-kept, and unknown, artistic complexes of Sitges. It is in this quasi-museum complex that the main function of the Foundation is carried out, which since the 1990s has been dedicated to the active support of elderly people in a residence.
